The European project SPINE - Smart Public transport Initiative for climate Neutral cities in Europe, of which the Foundation is an affiliated entity of the Municipality of Bologna along with 38 other beneficiaries, including 11 European cities including Bologna, aims to accelerate progress towards climate neutrality by improving the overall offer of public transport, in order to make it more accessible, inclusive, attractive, and in line with users' economic needs and expectations. The project fits into the EU Mission 100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030.

The project, which has a duration of 48 months, involves the implementation of Living Labs in 4 pilot cities: Bologna, Antwerp, Tallinn, and Las Palmas, where co-creation activities take place involving a wide range of stakeholders to promote public transport intermodality based on users' needs and requirements.

The Foundation is involved in mapping the stakeholder, as well as in the design, organization, and implementation of participatory co-design workshops with citizens and other relevant actors in 3 multimodal mobility hubs in Bologna, located in Mazzini, Corticella, and Casteldebole.

The CITIES 4.0 project brings together 5 partners, representing 4 "innovation ecosystems" from 4 different cities: Eindhoven (Netherlands), Leuven (Belgium), Turku (Finland), and Bologna.

The partners of the European project CITIES 4.0, Brainport Eindhoven, Leuven MindGate, Turku Science Park Ltd, ESTI, and the Fondazione Pietro Giacomo Rusconi, Villa Ghigi, per l’Innovazione Urbana, published the collection of good practices of the innovative ecosystems of Bologna, Turku, Leuven, and Eindhoven, taking a further important step in the collaborative journey that began at the end of 2022.

Since February 2024, the TIMES project - Technology and Innovation for Maps of Emergency Social resilience has begun, with the Foundation partnering with the Municipality of Cesena and ANCI Emilia Romagna.

Through this project the Foundation and the partners will work on new methodologies and tools that facilitate and organize civic responses and volunteer actions in emergencies, improving coordination between volunteering and the Civil Protection system by focusing on civil preparedness for extreme events.

More specifically, the project aims to achieve the following specific objectives:

  • Define emergency response strategies that bridge the perceived and concrete gap between the population, volunteers, rescuers, and authorities, reducing the gap between formal and informal practices during a crisis event;
  • Identify structures and social dynamics to build a community capable of minimizing the psychosocial effects of a crisis;
  • Develop digital tools as an inclusive and effective interface to engage spontaneous volunteer movements during emergencies, reducing the gap between institutions and citizens.

TIMES will have a duration of 12 months (February 2024 - April 2025), at the end of which the following results will have been achieved:

  • Establish a knowledge base on the dynamics of social resilience at the city level during a crisis event;
  • Update the Civil Protection Plan of Cesena with a section dedicated to scenarios and a reasoned map of community resources;
  • Define strategies and digital tools for emergency response that bridge the perceived and concrete gap between the population, volunteers, rescuers, and authorities;
  • Model an approach transferable to other municipalities at the regional level.
